Labor unions and employers need to take action too

The current goals of labor unions and employers, as well as their negotiating styles, are strongly affected by past experience. The stagnation of our economy and its inadequate development capacity could potentially jeopardize our standard of living. Our current culture of conflict makes it impossible to develop the motivation that is needed for genuine cooperation. The increasing tendency of companies to opt out of collective wage agreements should be regarded as a signal for action.

The aforementioned organizational systems need to be reformed, a process that poses a major challenge, and will be lengthy. Estimates of 10 to 20 years in this regard strike me as being unduly short. However, I am confident that the pressure of circumstance will force us to ramp up our learning curve sufficiently. On the other hand, the issue of regaining a spiritual orientation is much more difficult, in my opinion. The current lack of spiritual visions and values stems from a take on self-realization that no longer reflects the indispensable relationship of the individual to society. This has resulted in a situation where, 50 years after Germany placed far too much emphasis on community consciousness, the country has lost both its spiritual bearings and its sense of community consciousness. It is currently unclear whether Germany will be able to define-before it is too late-new values that can form the basis for a viable social consensus.
